THE CAPUCHIN CHURCH
It was built in 1585 together with the nearby
convent in order to host the lesser capuchin monks, an order
which was suppressed in 1866. It is dedicated to St. Mary of the
Angels. The faēade is soberly defined by essential geometric
patterns, after the poverty and humility of the monks. Three 18th
century marble statues on the right represent St. John the
Evangelist, the Lady of Assumption and Mary Magdalene bearing an
iron cross as a symbol of the passion of the Christ. The convent
was raised at the back of the church but consequently to the
suppression of the order it was used as a judicial prison. The
church presents a richly decorated wooden altar showing a 18th
century painting where the Madonna of the Angels is represented
together with the saints Francis and Anthony from Paola.
